Submitting shapefiles with polygon boundaries for your management areas is the most efficient way for us to assign your agency permissions for routes on AllTrails. These boundaries allow our team to quickly identify and manage the trails within your area.
If Your Agency Has Geospatial Data:
- If your agency has an official database for geospatial data, a GIS manager, or staff with access to shapefiles for your management area, please ask them to provide this data. You can then forward it to your AllTrails account manager.
If Your Agency Lacks Geospatial Data:
- If your agency does not have access to geospatial data but knows its management boundaries, you can create a simple shapefile by following the steps below.
Hand-Drawing a Shapefile
Mapbox offers a tool called GeoJSON.io that allows users to create custom geoboundaries by drawing them directly on a map.
Steps to Create a Shapefile:
- Open GeoJSON.io: Navigate to GeoJSON.io.
- Locate Your Area: Zoom and scroll to the area where you manage properties.
- Activate Drawing Mode: Click the button to start drawing.
-
Create Your Polygon: Click on the map to place vertices and form a polygon.
• The polygon doesn’t need to be exact but should accurately represent your management boundaries. This helps us assign trail permissions accurately. -
Close the Polygon: When finished, click the first vertex or press ‘Enter’ to close the shape.
• To edit, select the polygon and drag the vertices as needed. - Save the Shapefile: Once all polygons are drawn, click ‘Save’ and select ‘Shapefile’. A .zip file containing the necessary files will be downloaded.
- Send the File: Email the .zip file to your AllTrails account manager.
